Mayday
Mayday is the clandestine resistance movement that opposes Gilead from both inside and outside its borders. It operates as a decentralized network of operatives, safe houses, and escape routes, known collectively as the Underground Femaleroad. Mayday's primary activities include smuggling fugitives—especially Handmaids and their children—out of Gilead, gathering and transmitting intelligence, and coordinating acts of sabotage. The organization is considered a terrorist entity by Gilead and is hunted relentlessly by the Eyes, Gilead's secret police.
Structure and Methods
Mayday functions through a cell-based structure, with operatives often unaware of the full extent of the network. Key figures include Ada, a former hunting guide who personally smuggled the infant Baby Nicole out of Gilead, and Elijah, a former law professor who escaped across the border. They run safe houses such as SanctuCare, a refugee organization for escaped Gilead women, and Carpitz, a carpet wholesaler that serves as a staging ground for operations. The organization uses a variety of methods to communicate, including microdots—an old technology that reduces documents to microscopic size, which are then hidden on surfaces such as the Pearl Girls' brochures. Neil, operating under the cover of a used clothing store called The Clothes Hound, reads these microdots with a viewer fitted inside a fountain pen. The network also relies on a network of guides in the border regions of Vermont and Maine, who are often interconnected by marriage and motivated by either anti-Gilead sentiment or payment, as reflected in the saying "Mayday is Payday."
Key Operations and Agents
Mayday's most significant operation is the smuggling of Baby Nicole out of Gilead as an infant. Her mother, a Handmaid, gave her to trusted friends who transported her through the woods into Vermont, using a backpack and a sedative to keep her quiet. Ada was one of the guides on this mission, which used a historic people-smuggling route through Trois-Rivières. The operation was a major propaganda defeat for Gilead, which demanded Nicole's return and made her a symbol of stolen innocence. In Canada, Nicole was raised by Neil and Melanie, who were themselves deep-cover Mayday operatives running The Clothes Hound as a front for intelligence exchange. Their cover was blown when the Eyes, tipped off by the Pearl Girls, identified them as key operatives. They were killed by a car bomb planted by Gilead agents. Mayday also maintains an inside source within Gilead itself, who provides critical intelligence on security deployments, escape routes, and the inner workings of the regime. This source, later revealed to be Aunt Lydia, communicates via microdots hidden on Pearl Girls brochures, which are then collected by Melanie at The Clothes Hound.
Relationship with the Aunts and the Eyes
Mayday's existence is a constant threat to Gilead's stability. Commander Judd, head of the Eyes, acknowledges that the high success rate of escapes cannot be explained without an internal leak. He suspects someone within Gilead is informing the Underground Femaleroad. The Aunts, particularly Aunt Lydia, are aware of Mayday's activities. Aunt Lydia herself is the source of the intelligence that Mayday receives, using her position to photograph classified files and pass them out of Gilead. She also uses the Pearl Girls, originally her initiative, as a cover for intelligence gathering. The Pearl Girls' brochures, printed at Ardua Hall, become the courier system for the microdots. When the Eyes raid the Ardua Hall print shop, they discover the microdot method but fail to identify the traitor. Aunt Lydia's double game is a central tension: she publicly supports the regime while secretly working to undermine it.
The Final Mission and Collapse of Gilead
The climax of Mayday's efforts is the mission to extract the document cache from Gilead. The source insists that only Baby Nicole can be the courier. Nicole, now a teenager, agrees to infiltrate Gilead as a fake convert, using the name Jade. She is trained by Ada and Garth in self-defense and prayer, and receives a scarified tattoo on her arm reading "GOD/LOVE," which is used to conceal a microdot containing the evidence. After being "gathered" by the Pearl Girls in Toronto, she is brought to Ardua Hall. There, she is reunited with her half-sister, Agnes, who is a Supplicant Aunt. Aunt Lydia reveals Nicole's identity to Agnes and Becka, and the three women plan an escape. Nicole and Agnes flee Ardua Hall, with Nicole incapacitating Aunt Vidala with a heartstopper punch. They travel by car, bus, and boat, eventually reaching Canada. The microdot Nicole carries contains a cache of documents that reveals the crimes of Gilead's elite, including the murder of Commanders by other Commanders. The release of this information triggers the Ba'al Purge, a wave of internal purges that weakens the regime and enables a coordinated Mayday sabotage campaign, leading to the final collapse of Gilead.
